Doug Winter has penned out Featured Article, another insightful Market Report on this years Baltimore ANA. He says “This year’s ANA was outstanding for me and many of the dealers that I spoke to (and who I trust) told me that it was a great show for them as well.”

Platinum inches higher, gold hits 7-week low as speculators flocked into platinum on Wednesday after prices tumbled to a six-month low the previous day, while gold dropped to its lowest level in seven weeks before bargain hunters resurfaced. Expect more volitility in the coming weeks as the economy tries to sort itself out.

Bowers and Merena Auctions hosted their Baltimore Rarities Sale on July 26, 2008 just prior to the ANA World’s Fair of Money. The auction presented approximately 1,100 coin and 200 currency lots and realized a total of $4,427,243.

Heritage Auction Galleries has set the record for the most valuable ANA Auction ever, $40 Million ! Significant and classic rarities from all series in American numismatics, most of them offered in the Platinum Night catalogs, smashed the previous record of $27.7 million set last year at the Milwaukee ANA event.

Two prominent rare coin dealers, Anthony Terranova of New York City and Laura Sperber of Legend Numismatics, jointly bid a total of $12,650 to have lunch with Jim Halperin, Heritage Auction Galleries Co-Chairman, best-selling author and acclaimed numismatic authority .

Laura Sperber from Legend Numismatics provides our Featured new item today with her perspective on the Baltimore ANA show that just wrapped up this past weekend. Always informative, Laura provides a unique perspective on the market for High End material and the auctions.

Goldline International has acquired the very first uniquely designed 2008 .99999 pure gold one-ounce Maple Leaf coins struck by the Royal Canadian Mint. For collectors of modern bullion products this represents an opportunity to secure one of the first coins produced of this special series.

Heritage will be auctioning a Unique $5 note from the Red Oaks, Iowa Bank. This is only serial number 1, Black Charter Note from any bank to survive, and is one of only three Original Series Black Charter Notes known to exist (Fr. 399).

We also have another report on the Heritage’s Platinum Night at the Baltimore World’s Fair of Money. What a success it was! In total, over $27 million in great coins sold in Thursday’s evening sessions. Overall, this auction is expected to bring in nearly $40 million.

The US Mint unveiled images of the upcoming 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle based on the design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The coins will go on sale in early 2009. Plasters of the coin that will be featured at the United States Mint booth on the bourse floor at the World’s Fair of Money.

The Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to well-known researcher, author and rare coin dealer John “J.D.” Dannreuther during the organization’s annual PNG Day banquet conducted this year in Baltimore, Maryland.

At the Canadian Numismatic Association convention in Ottawa on July 18, C&P Numismatics of Quebec City sold a very rare $5 Bank of Vancover note for a record price.

A hoard of 300 Morgan Dollars was found buried in the backyard of an Amarillo,Texas home. The coins dated from 1878 to 1904 and so far no one knows when the coins were buried or by whom.

The United States Mint announced today that Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Jr., has appointed Roger W. Burdette to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC).

What’s New this Monday at CoinLink ……..

This 1943-S bronze cent, found in circulation in 1944 by a Southern California collector, has been acquired by Rare Coin Wholesalers of Dana Point, California for $72,500.  It is graded NGC AU-53.This is ANA week in Baltimore, and with so much going on we will try to sort through all of the news being generated and provide you with some insights into the show, the auctions and the market in general. Also, send us your comments, they are always welcome.

Greg Reynolds highlights the Ed Price Collection being put on the block by Heritage this week. A great collection with a facinating array of both very rare varieties and beautiful gem examples of eary Dines and Quarter Eagles.

A previously unrecorded 1943-S Lincoln cent, erroneously struck on a bronze planchet and found in circulation by a teenaged collector over a half century ago, has been acquired by Rare Coin Wholesalers of Dana Point, California.

Doug Winter provides some Pre-ANA thoughts on what to expect in Baltimore this year. Great overview and as always an interesting perspective from one of the industry experts.

Another introductory story about the events and exhibits at this years Baltimore ANA, including the return of the Walton 1913 Nickel.

The Bayside New York Collection contains an incredible 100-plus half dollars minted between 1794 and 1807. Heritage will offer this wonderful assemblage as a Featured Collection in the upcoming Heritage Signature Auction.

According to reports the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation will net as much as $54.9 Million, after expenses, from the divestment of assets sold off from the infamous rare-coin fund managed by Tom Noe.

The Royal Mint releases a new reverse design for the Britannia coins, the seventh since this British coin was introduced in 1987.Britannia has symbolised Britain and her proud island heritage since the time of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (117-138AD). She first appeared on British currency in 1672 on the copper coins of Charles II. Used as a political symbol of the war with the Dutch, her olive branch represented a desire for peace above conflict

Australian Coin forger’s ‘Charlotte Medal’ brings $750,000 at the Noble Numismatics auction. The Charlotte Medal is silver disc engraved by the convict and expert forger Thomas Barrett. Barrett crafted the souvenir medal at the request of the ship’s doctor, John White, when the First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay on January 20, 1788. It is considered by mant to be Australia’s first piece of colonial art.

The United States Mint announced today that Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz has been named the recipient of the 2008 Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture (NAAEMS). The award, conferred by the American Numismatic Association (ANA), will be presented to Mr. Licaretz on August 2, 2008, at the ANA World’s Fair of Money® in Baltimore.
